ICO sizes

Best for transparent logos

PNG is a strong source format for favicons because it can keep transparency, clean edges and UI-style graphics.

Browser-based conversion

The PNG file is processed locally in your browser and converted into an ICO file without server upload.

Multi-size ICO output

Create a favicon.ico containing common icon sizes for browser tabs, bookmarks, desktop shortcuts and Windows apps.

PNG-specific preparation

Preserve clean edges and transparency in your favicon

PNG is usually the safest raster source for logos because it supports alpha transparency and lossless edges.

Use real alpha transparency

Remove checkerboard or white backgrounds in the source editor. Only actual transparent pixels remain transparent in the ICO.

Leave a small safe area

Keep important artwork away from the outer edge so it does not feel cramped in browser tabs or rounded operating-system treatments.

Prefer a high-resolution source

A 256ร—256 or larger PNG gives the browser enough detail to generate the full set of smaller embedded icon sizes.

PNG to ICO questions

Does PNG transparency work in ICO?

Yes. Transparent PNG pixels can be preserved in the generated ICO output.

Should I use PNG or JPG for a logo favicon?

Use PNG for logos, text and transparent artwork. JPG is better suited to photographic sources without transparency.

Can a small PNG be enlarged?

It can be resized, but enlarging a small source does not create new detail. Start with at least 256ร—256 pixels when possible.
