Use real alpha transparency

Leave a small safe area
Keep important artwork away from the outer edge so it does not feel cramped in browser tabs or rounded operating-system treatments.
Prefer a high-resolution source

It can be resized, but enlarging a small source does not create new detail. Start with at least 256×256 pixels when possible.
