How to make a clear favicon from a JPG photo
JPEG files are designed for photographs and do not contain transparent pixels, so the crop, background and contrast matter more at small favicon sizes.
Crop around one subject
Use a tight square crop around the face, product or symbol. Wide photographs lose recognizable detail when reduced to 16×16 or 32×32.
Choose the background first
JPG has no alpha transparency. Any white, dark or colored background in the source remains visible in every generated ICO size.
Avoid repeated JPEG compression
Start with the highest-quality original available. Compression blocks and ringing become more visible around sharp logo edges after resizing.

Will a JPG favicon have a transparent background?
No. JPG does not support transparency, so the source background is preserved. Use PNG to ICO or SVG to ICO when transparency is required.
What JPG dimensions work best?
A square image of at least 256×256 pixels is a practical source. Larger images are acceptable when the main subject is centered and clearly cropped.
Does converting JPG to ICO improve image quality?
No. The converter resizes and packages the existing pixels; it cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression.
