How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF
Page numbers make PDFs easier to read, review and reference. They are especially useful for reports, contracts, school documents, manuals and long files shared with other people.
Why add page numbers?
A PDF without page numbers can be hard to discuss. Instead of saying “look near the end,” people can refer to page 12, page 27 or appendix page 3.
Page numbering also makes printed documents look more professional and helps readers keep pages in the correct order.

Best page number positions
- Bottom center: best for reports, essays and general documents.
- Bottom right: good for business files and printed packets.
- Top right: useful when the footer already contains signatures or notes.
- Custom prefix: helpful for drafts, appendices or document sections.
Before you download
Check whether the first page should be numbered. Cover pages, title pages and table-of-contents pages sometimes use a different numbering style or no number at all.
If you also need branding, combine page numbers with a subtle PDF watermark.
